As a motivational speaker who travels often, I have stayed in a lot of hotels. Some are beautiful. Some are convenient. Some are comfortable. But every once in a while, a hotel does something so simple and memorable that it makes me think, “Now that is great customer service.”

That is exactly what DoubleTree by Hilton has done with their famous chocolate chip cookie.
After a long day of travel, you walk into the hotel tired, hungry, and maybe a little frazzled. Then, at check-in, they hand you a warm chocolate chip cookie.

Not just a cookie. A warm cookie! That little detail matters.

DoubleTree has turned a simple cookie into a signature welcome experience. It is more than a snack. It sends a message: “We are glad you are here. You matter. We thought about how to make this moment better.”

That is the heart of going above and beyond.

Great customer service is not always about doing something huge. Sometimes it is about doing something small with intention. A smile. A warm greeting. Remembering someone’s name. Offering help before being asked. Or handing someone a delicious cookie at the exact moment they need a little comfort.

Every workplace can create its own “cookie moment.”

If you work in an office, it might be greeting someone with kindness. In healthcare, it might be reassuring a worried patient. In education, it might be encouraging a student who feels invisible. In customer service, it might be solving a problem with patience instead of frustration.

Small things are not small when they make people feel seen.

DoubleTree’s cookie is brilliant because it is simple, consistent, and memorable. People remember how you make them feel, whether you are running a hotel, leading a team, serving customers, teaching students, or supporting coworkers.

The question every organization should ask is this:

What is our chocolate chip cookie? What is the small thing we do that makes people smile?

Going above and beyond does not always require a bigger budget or a complicated strategy. Sometimes it starts with asking, “How can we make this moment more meaningful?”

DoubleTree did not just give away cookies. They created a feeling. And sometimes, the smallest gestures create the biggest impact.
