What makes someone an energized leader?
When I asked Dr. Jeff Hendred that question on The Energized Leader Podcast, his answer was simple and powerful: Influence.
Leadership is not just a title or position. Leadership is how you show up, how you treat people, how you respond during hard seasons, and how you help others keep moving forward. Dr. Hendred has spent years leading in education, ministry, business, and the community. Through every role, one thing is clear: energized leaders create environments where people feel valued, supported, and encouraged to grow.
Know Your Why
One of the first things Dr. Hendred shared about creating a positive workplace culture is the importance of knowing your why. Many organizations know what they do and how they do it, but not everyone knows why they exist. When a team understands the purpose behind the work, it creates clarity, motivation, and direction. People are no longer just completing tasks. They are contributing to something meaningful. In Dr. Hendred's business, Polar Xpress, his why is centered on the customer. He said it beautifully: “It’s all about you.”
That is a powerful mindset for any leader. A positive culture begins when leaders stop making it all about themselves and start asking, “How can I serve the people in front of me?”
Celebrate Progress
Every team goes through tough seasons. There are times when people feel tired, discouraged, overwhelmed, or stuck. During those moments, energized leaders create momentum by celebrating progress. Small wins matter. One step forward matters.
Encouragement creates energy. Celebration creates momentum.
Together Is Better
One of the most touching moments in our conversation was when Dr. Hendred talked about his wife and the difficult health journey she experienced after a brain bleed. That season reminded him of the importance of spending time with the people we love. He shared a simple but powerful phrase: Together is better.
That applies to marriage, family, friendship, leadership, and workplace culture. Teams are stronger when they work together. Organizations are stronger when leaders create connection instead of isolation.
The Heart of an Energized Leader
An energized leader uses influence to bring out the best in others. They know their why. They value people. They build strong relationships. They use feedback to grow. They celebrate progress. They make time to reflect. Your energy is contagious. Your attitude is contagious. Your influence is contagious. So the question is not just, “Are you leading?”
The better question is: What kind of influence are you leaving behind?
